Sun Spots, Age Spots, Post-Acne Hyper-pigmentation

Pigmentation at a glance

What is Pigmentation?
Pigmentation is a production of melanin pigment in the skin that creates a skin color varying from the palest beige to the darkest brown. In a healthy skin the distribution of the color throughout the body is usually even with some mild variations (for example on the elbows or in the skin folds).

However some people experience a patchy or uneven color that affects their appearance and is aesthetically unpleasant. There can be an increase of pigmentation - called hyper-pigmentation and a decrease - called hypo-pigmentation. Apart from the medical reasons there are some cosmetic reasons as well.

Different Types of Hyper-Pigmentation.
  • Post-traumatic pigmentation can happen after after a surgery or skin trauma, post-inflammatory pigmentation can happen after an acne flair up.
  • Freckles and sun spots are induced by the UV damage that can be recent or accumulated through the years of sun exposure.
  • Melasma can be due to some hormonal changes in the body or sometimes due to a hormonal medication, such as birth control pill.
  • Sometimes the skin becomes more sensitive to the UV due to a photo-sensitizing medication (such as Accutane or Tetracycline,or even photo-sensitizing food or a herbal supplement (St. John's Wort is a good example).
  • Also an irritating skin care product used without an adequate sun protection can lead to a sun-damage and subsequent change in the skin colour.
  • In general darker skin types are more prone to experience darker pigmentation since there is more melanin pigment in the skin to become stimulated.
